U.S. outside hitter Alex Klineman, who was an All American at Stanford University, gives us a short tutorial on how the national team practices the drop step for deep ball passing.
As Alix describes, sometimes there’s not enough time to get in position to pass the ball in your midline. Instead, you can take a quick drop step in order to open up your shoulders and angle your platform towards the target.

As you can see in the video, the national team sometimes uses a rolling chair to practice the pivot motion and shoulder angle that a drop step requires.
