2020 Annual Report

A Message from our Founder

Welcome to the Dig Pink community! We are excited for you to be a part of Side-Out’s mission to serve those living with metastatic breast cancer. If you haven’t yet, be sure to join our Dig Pink Facebook group where you can connect and collaborate with other Dig Pink organizers and supporters.

For over a decade, Side-Out has seen thousands of teams join us in experiencing the magic of these Dig Pink events for themselves and we want to help more teams make these memorable experiences in their communities.

This guide walks you through hosting a Dig Pink event and is filled with resources you can grab and share with your coaches, parents, players, and school!

We wish you the best of luck on your journey to creating a wonderful experience and tradition for your athletes and community.

Thank you for supporting our mission.

Sincerely,

Our Impact

Side-Out Phase 3 Closeout

We have concluded the enrollment of the latest Side-Out sponsored trial, a nationwide effort to help doctors understand and predict response to treatment in newly diagnosed metastatic breast cancer patients. As scientists and physicians, we like to describe this trial as “an effort to advance precision medicine by identifying predictive biomarkers of response to first-line targeted treatment for metastatic breast cancer patients”.

New Side-Out Research Program Pilot

In 10 years Dig Pink has raised more than $15 million dollars for Side-Out’s metastatic breast cancer clinical trials and created a community of advocates more than 9,000 teams strong. What started as our Founder Rick’s two passions colliding unexpectedly, has become an experience that anyone can connect with – not just volleyball players and coaches. Side Out’s greatest ambition is to cultivate life-long advocates, extending the lives of those living with advanced metastatic breast cancer, and revolutionizing the trajectory of breast cancer treatments forever.

Side-Out Phase 3 Closeout

After Rick’s mother Gloria was diagnosed with stage IV breast cancer, Rick and his father Bryant started the Side-Out Foundation to challenge the healthcare community. They believed if Side-Out could extend the lives of those living with the most advanced stage of breast cancer, they could really make a difference for anyone living with breast cancer in search of answers and treatment options. Rick was a high school varsity volleyball coach at the time, so sharing his mom’s story and fundraising for advanced metastatic breast cancer at volleyball events was the most logical first step.

Dig Pink Logo

In its 11th year, Dig Pink® was as strong as ever, with over 730 volleyball teams hosting impactful and inspiring events all around the country, and some even overseas! During the 2019 season, we were able to travel to different places, meet teams that have been by our side for years and learn about the unique ways that they incorporate Dig Pink into their schools and communities. We continue to be amazed by the passion our supporting teams have for the cause and look forward to the growth of the Dig Pink movement moving forward!

AMBASSADOR PROGRAM

Our Ambassador Program presents opportunities for students to make a difference by leading a Side-Out Campaign in their community, raising funds for Side-Out’s metastatic breast cancer research, and learning more about breast cancer.

In 2020, we opened this program up to any students who are looking to make an impact on metastatic breast cancer and in their community. To be a Side-Out Ambassador, students must have completed a Side-Out fundraising campaign in their community, completed breast cancer education hours and an event plan, and wrote a 500-750 word essay about the experience, and have a sponsor write a letter of recommendation.

This year, we had 9 Ambassador Program applications from students around the country. Of the 9 Ambassadors, 3 were awarded scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $3,500.
